Pastor Levi Lusko with Pastor Pedro Garcia

June 23rd, 2010

Tonight we have Pastor Pedro Garcia, from Calvary Chapel Kendall out here for Skull Church and I think it would be accurate for me to say that the excitement levels of people I’ve been running into has been intensely high.

Pastor Levi had the chance to do a little interview with him, so if you missed it, be sure to check it out here.

Be sure to stop by Skull Church tonight at 7 in the Strand and Liberty theaters, or tune in on the radio or at skullchurch.com

Future of Forestry: Travel III EP

June 21st, 2010

I feel like I never really gave Future of Forestry a chance. I guess that’s not completely true. I did pick their Christmas album to be one of the best of the year, but after the festivities all died down I kind of let Future of Forestry die down as well. Sure, we play them on the radio, and though I never really tuned them out, I never really tuned them in either. Today changes everything. If you can, even remotely, appreciate music and film done well, I think you will really enjoy these videos.

Also, if your environment allows, I suggest cranking up the volume of your speakers to an uncommonly loud volume. Also, maybe set the mood by dimming your lights.

Now, watch these.

They have their final installment of the “Travel” series releasing later this month (June 30th) and I am fantastically excited about it. I really, truly, and sincerely hope you will be as ecstatic as I am.

Check out their myspace for sure!

An Interview With Seabird

June 16th, 2010

Seabird

We had the pleasure of talking to Seabird last week when they were out here for Skull Church, which, by the way, they did an amazing job at. Devan did the interview and they talked about all sorts of things like Montana, music (obviously), tours, Haiti, as well as other fantastic things. I think you might find it quite enjoyable. I know I did.

Check out the interview if you are into wonderful things.
Swing by their myspace if you’re into things that are awesome.

Matt Elkins & Mustache Monday

May 18th, 2010

Mustache Monday

“I WOULD LIKE TO THANK GOD FOR BUILDING ME SUCH A GREAT PLATFORM FOR GROWING HAIR…” -Matt Elkins

This is a man with a mustache. This is a mustache on a mission. Meet Matt Elkins. He is the winner of our “Mustache Monday” contest that took place last week. Though we had many great submissions, it was clear that Matt’s ’stache had everything we were looking for.

Let’s chat for a minute about Matt’s ’stache.

All mustaches say one thing or another, but not all mustaches have a purpose. A good mustache must have a purpose. It’s so easy to come across mustaches that serve little to no purpose. Those mustaches just hang out on upper lips looking like shadows, looking like they have no clue as to what they are doing. This mustache… this mustache is worth a thousand words. This is a mustache that has the boldness to say, “Hey look at me!” while at the same time complimenting it’s wearer by saying things like, “Hey, look at Matt!” and, “Hey, Matt has a mustache! He’s dignified and could take you!” I like to think if this mustache could drive a car it would be driving this and if this mustache had a pet, it would be this or maybe even these.

So why did Matt’s mustache win? Well, it’s simple really. His mustache compliments him. Sure, his mustache could be one that drives the most expensive car in the world and keeps endangered species as house pets, but that’s not Matt. You see, Matt’s mustache is all him. Matt owns his mustache, his mustache doesn’t own him. That’s what mustaches are all about. You have to be the one in control. You can’t just grow a mustache and allow it to take control of your face… roaming free, doing whatever it wants. If you grow a mustache people shouldn’t even notice that you have one. They should just notice there is something about you that is powerful and respectable then they notice your mustache. First, they notice you for who you are then they notice the mustache. It’s all about the ’stache complimenting you and that’s why Matt Elkins has a mustache capable of winning such a contest as Mustache Monday.

Artist Spotlight: Castledoor

May 4th, 2010

Castledoor

Did you ever find yourself listening to boy bands in the early 2000’s? Did you ever listen to Plus One? Did you ever enjoy the sweet melodies and harmonies that flowed from their lips? Were they so continuously played that you put yourself to sleep by singing their songs in your head? If you did (unlike myself), you should be able to recognize some of the same pleasant vocals from the band Castledoor. If you didn’t (like myself), I think you should still be able to appreciate the greatness of this not so well known indie band.

Made up of several members, Nate Cole and Gabe Combs are probably most well known for their time spent in the Christian Pop boy band, PlusOne. Though as of recent, Gabe Combs has decided to move on to new things, Castledoor isn’t going anywhere or at least most of the members still plan on sticking together. Nate, Liska, Joel and Brando still plan on making music together and a “Flashlight EP” should hopefully be releasing soon and are saying they feel the best is yet to come.

Close your eyes. Now image you are in a wonderful land of green fields where paper flowers sprout from the ground and illustrated creatures of kind fall from the sky bringing with them delightful treats like colored balloons and an assortment of lollipops. The sun literally wears a giant pair of sunglasses and can’t help but smile at the woodland creatures frolicking in the fields. The scene is eclectic, yet strangely relaxing. Ahead of you is a massive willow tree that also wears sunglasses and dances to the wind. Now picture a band is under the massive willow tree singing tunes that are sweet like honey to your ears. Now open your eyes. I bet you never even closed them. That’s just how Castledoor rolls. Their music can take you to another land even if you’re working hard at your nine to five job or trying to write that research paper that’s due tomorrow.

Castledoor is our artist spotlight for the month of May. This is exciting for me because it’s so unexpected. They kind of came out of nowhere with their high pitched vocals and unique music style. I don’t even know what genre of music to group them into. Genre classification or not, Castledoor has definitely been a favorite here around the station. If you listen to the radio then it’s very probably that you’ve heard the songs, “Dumpster Diving” and “Fifth Tambourine.” How could we not play such a unique and intriguing band?

A couple things about the band that are kind of interesting. In March they were awarded a nice little treat by The International Songwriting Competition (the top songwriting competition in the world) with “Fifth Tambourine” being the submitted song that also came in second place at the competition that was judged by artists and celebrities like tom waits, black francis, james mercer, timbaland, robert smith & the kings of leon. That’s pretty cool.

With all of that being said, and although they’ve been around for five years and have lost a couple members, I agree that “the best is yet to come.”

Seriously, check out their myspace or swing by their facebook to encourage them and thank them for being so awesome.

Here’s a little video treat for you as well.

Staff Picks: May 2010

April 27th, 2010

We are starting something new this month on the blog. I (Elisha) am very excited and I like to think that everyone else is pretty excited as well. Once a month, the staff here at the station will be selecting our favorite songs on the radio and making a nice little blog for you to check out.

I think that the type of music a person listens to can tell a lot about their style and their personality. With that said, we’re going to give you a little insight into what we enjoy. Obviously, here at the station plays music that we like, so all of the tunes are great, but the following select few have managed to make themselves comfortable in our heads and our hearts. An Interview with Spoken

April 15th, 2010

Spoken

Matt Baird, from Spoken, had an opportunity to come up to the station and record an interview with me after Skull Church last night. Speaking of Skull Church, it was an awesome night. The band did great and they were definitely a lot of fun.

Here are some interesting things about the band. Spoken has made six albums on multiple record labels in their 14 year career and guess what, there’s another album on the way. We talk about all sorts of stuff in this interview including secret myspace accounts, creating an album and music and band as a ministry.
